Directions to Trailhead: From Payson, go north on SR87 to FR 300. Turn right and follow FR 300 for 12 miles to the signed junction. The junction is across from the trailhead for the Tunnel Trail. Turn left and go North .3 miles to the General Springs Cabin. Trail Description: From the trailhead, the trail enters beautiful General Springs Canyon. The trail soon crosses to the east side of the creek which usually has water. The trail stays creek-side for the first half mile before climbing away from the creek. After a half mile the trail drops back down to the creek and crosses back to the west side. The trail is easy to follow; and about 1.5 miles from the trailhead, the canyon widens out and there are numerous campsites. The trail remains mostly flat as it proceeds through open meadows and creek crossings until it reaches 3 miles from the trailhead and the junction with the Arizona Trail. The Fred Haught Trail forks right. After crossing the creek, the trail climbs over a steep hill and drops back into Fred Haught Canyon. A quarter-mile off-trail hike to the south will take you to the remnants of Fred Haught Canyon. The main trail and this hike continues to head north. The trail starts climbing and soon reaches the head of Quien Sabe Draw. The trail now descends Quien Sabe Draw until Quien Sabe Spring. Here the trail turns right (its kind of easy to miss) and climbs out a small side draw before reaching FR 95 about 5 miles from the trailhead. Turn right and follow FR95 to FR139A. There is supposed to be a point where the trail leaves the road and cuts through the woods but I did not find it. If you are continuing on the Cabin Loop, at FR 139A cross the road at the signed trailhead and follow the trail down to the Pinchot Cabin and the start of the Houston Bros Trail and the U-Bar Trail. |
